The Maryborough Sporting Car Club has appointed Ryan Harris as the new General Manager of the club affective from Monday 17th August. After two seasons as President and a year as Vice President, Ryan will now become the club’s first ever full time employee and he will become responsible for management of all Maryborough Sporting Car Club events, sales, revenue, and the overall financial success of the facility.
In addition to this, he will be responsible for the recruiting, hiring, and developing of any employees, supervising all club operations, facility management, marketing execution, loss prevention and customer service. With regular interaction with the executive committee, Ryan will oversee all operations of the Maryborough Sporting Car Club and will organise, facilitate and coordinate all activities at or to do with the Maryborough Speedway. Ryan will still be answerable to the committee of the Maryborough Sporting Car Club and is looking forward to taking the Maryborough Speedway to new heights in the upcoming season. The Maryborough Sporting Car Club committee have been working on this for a few months now and with all things in place, the Employment Agreement between the Maryborough Sporting Car Club Ltd and Ryan Harris was officially signed at the last Committee Meeting on Wednesday night. At this meeting, Ryan stood down as President to accept the new General Managers position, and Michael Barron was elected as the “caretaker” President until the AGM at the start of next month. So with the first practice meeting only 2 weeks away, the Maryborough Speedway is looking forward to breaking new ground in 2009/2010. New Drainage and the New Dummy Grid is nearly finished Posted 10th August, 2009 The Maryborough Speedway has been busy during the off season, with more earthworks and improvements. The club is currently upgrading the drainage in turns one and two, along with building a new dummy grid behind the control tower. Due to the problems that occur due to the extra run off from rain, which has been caused by the newly constructed spectator hill in turns one and two, the complex has had to get in and stop the water getting onto the track. As we have all seen, any kind of rain now causes a "sloppy mess" in turn two, which has made for a very inconsistent race track. Thanks to help of Brad Watson, Frank Packer, Glenn Richters, Kimber Plumbing and many, many hard working club volunteers, this project is nearing completion. With only a few weeks until the first practice night, the club is hoping to have this upgrade finalised. Even if it isn't, the practice will go ahead and the work in progress area's will be roped off. During this upgrade, the spectator safety fence will be moved out (away from the track), in and attempt to increase spectator safety. The walkways around the track have also been leveled out and made more wheelchair friendly. The second project, the new dummy grid, is also in its final stages of completion. Previously, the track was unable to use the "in" gate for all divisions, and with a lot of fill and a whole new plan, the new dummy grid has been built behind the control tower. This will see all divisions line up and head out onto the track through the one gate the gate closest to the wrecking yard). The "out" gate, will become just that, which will see a huge decrease in wasted time between heat races. The club will be holding a working bee in the coming weeks, so stayed tuned for details as the Maryborough nears the start of yet again another massive Speedway season. First Practice Night - Only 3 weeks away Posted 4th August, 2009 In just over 3 weeks time the first practice night of the season will hit the Maryborough Speedway on 29th August, 2009. Practice will commence at 5pm and finish around 9:30pm. To practice you will be required to have current insurance and car registration. Admission for practice is Free, and for cars practicing the cost is only $40 per car, payable on the day. A canteen and bar will be in operation on the night, so make plans to head out to get your early season fix of speedway action... For those that haven't put in your paperwork for 09/10 Licences, Rego and Insurance and you will be requiring it for practice, you will need to get it to Ryno, ASAP, or you may miss out on practice. Like North Queensland, the Northern Territory run there speedway season in the "dry season", during the colder months. Mitchell and his father Steve made the 2400 km trip compete in the Title and things look good from the outset, as Mitchell set one of the fastest times during practice. He then came out and had one heat win and finished second in his other two heat races. So after the qualifying heats, Mitch was the second highest qualifier and would line up in the Title race from position two. In the final Mitch had a great battle with fellow Queenslander Cody Maroske. The two battled amongst lap traffic and put on a great show for the locals, but Mitchell in the Thomsen Builders Datsun Sunny was narrowly beaten, but still very happy with second place in the Northern Territory Junior Sedan Title. Mitchell will now have a months break before he has another hitout in the car at the first Maryborough Speedway practice meeting of the season on 29th August. Newer, Bigger and Better - Maryborough Speedway Posted 2nd June, 2009 During the last couple of weeks, the Maryborough Speedway has once again had a huge face lift in preparation for this weekend's huge V8 Sprintcar Qld Title. The brand new spectator turfed & terraced hill in turns one and two (Barsby's Wrecking Yard End), is completed and ready for the expected big crowd this weekend. What was previously wasted space, the new huge earth bank has been terraced all the way around, increasing the capacity of the Maryborough Speedway to at least 7000 people. The club now can seat people right around the entire speedway, turning it into a stadium/coliseum like venue, that will create a fantastic atmosphere for Speedway. With the anticipation of a huge crowd this weekend, the Maryborough Speedway has also organised extra food vendors, which should help with making it easier to get a food at the venue. The club is even putting one in the pits, just for the drivers and crews. Also during the last few weeks, the widening of the pits through the middle section has been completed, which should certainly ease the congestion, which will make it a lot easier and safer especially for the large transporters/semi trailers. The Maryborough Sporting Car Club would like to thank to the help of a large team of hard working volunteers and through the services of great local business's like McLean's Earthmoving Contractors, Watson's Bobcat Hire, Allan Morrison's Excavator's, Dirt Digga's and Wide Bay Turf for making all this possible. Posted 15th May, 2009 The heavy earthmoving equipment has rolled into Maryborough Speedway to start building the new spectator area hill. Earthworks are set to continue through the weekend and into next week, but all will be ready for the 2009 Queensland V8 Sprintcar Title to be held at the venue on 6th & 7th June, 2009.
When finished the new spectator area should hold at least another 1500 people which should comfortably take the capacity of the Maryborough Speedway to around 7000 people. The new hill will extend right through turns one and two and join up to the big terraced spectator hill (built a couple of seasons ago) on the back straight. With the ever increasing crowds at the Maryborough Speedway and with the prospect of a sell out crowd over the June long weekend and the possibility of bigger and better meetings in the future, the club decided to push this development through and have it in operation for the V8 Sprintcar Queensland Title. The club has also been busy widening the middle section of the pit paddock, which will certainly ease congestion and has also improved the track lighting by further upgrading some of the bigger light towers. The Maryborough Sporting Car Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the hardworking people that have made all these things possible. Maryborough Speedway hasn't hosted the V8 Sprintcar Queensland title since 13th March in 1976, where the event was postponed a week due to rain and rerun on the 20th March, 1976. That event was won by Sydney's Dick Briton driving the Rod Farrell owned 'Winfield' V8 Sprintcar who was a late substitution for Gary Rush, who originally nominated for the event, but couldn't hang around to contest the Queensland Title the week later. This will be a very special weekend and people from all over the country will converge on Maryborough Speedway over the June long weekend. For those that haven't book accommodation, only odd nights here and there are available in Maryborough. However beautiful Hervey Bay (which is only a 25 minute drive from Maryborough and is on the coast over-looking Fraser Island) has plenty of vacancies and plenty of options to cater for all budgets. With anticipation of a capacity crowd on both nights of the Queensland Title, work is currently underway at the venue increasing spectator seating, increasing the number of food outlets at the track and widening the pit paddock to ease the congestion in the middle section of the pits. The Maryborough Speedway is certainly looking forward to hosting the 2009 Queensland V8 Sprintcar Title and hope you are here on 6th & 7th June, 2009. Working bee this Sunday Posted 7th May, 2009 The Maryborough Speedway is holding a working bee this Sunday(10th May) commencing at 9am. We are looking for some extra hands to help pull down some fences in preparation of the extension of the back straight spectator hill which will be brought all the way around to the pits in turn one, early next week. We also need to re-attach the shade cloth, shovel back the dirt around the fence and wash & prepare the track fence for the painting contractors to paint it the following weekend. The working bee will commence at 9am and with plenty of people should only take a couple of hours to complete the tasks at hand. So come along and lend a hand on Sunday morning. Cannon wins the King of the Ring Posted 4th May, 2009 Newcastle's Scott Cannon has won the V8 Dirt Modified King of the Ring. It was a convincing win for the former Australian Champion who beat home Peter Lack and last winners Luke Oldfield in a thrilling 30 lap feature race that everything. The track allowed for plenty of passing and plenty of action during the two nights and keep another big Maryborough crowd off over 2500 people, glued to their seats all weekend. The Modified Production feature was as good anyone in the venue has ever seen. The race track allowed for continual three and four wide racing lap after lap after lap. Aidan Raymont held off huge challenge from Rodney Pammenter on the outside to win the final round of G&W Racing series. Mark Raymont finished the feature in third after an awesome outside move to pass 2 or 3 cars in the final laps to finish the feature in third, and that position was enough to win the G&W Racing Qld Series for the 08/09 season. Lee Steffens certainly made the highlights reel for all the wrong reasons after having a huge roll along the main straight. Steffens ran high coming out of turn four after contact with another competitive, he hit the fence, rode the fence and rolled five or six times. Steffens got out unhurt, but the newly built Commodore is completely destroyed. The Formula 500's contested the Stallard "Queensland Nationals" and drivers came from all over the country, but it was the Victoria Ben McLeod who won the 30 lap feature race that nearly went without a stoppage, except on lap 26 when Townsville's Allan Iverson stopped in turn two. McLeod was in a class off his own and beat home Nathan Pronger and Maryborough's Dale Shilleto finishing third. The Formula 500's where fantastic all weekend and plans have already underway to make this event bigger and better in the 09/10 season. Maryborough's John Watson won the Nostalgia Sedans feature race ahead of Cyril Bates and Chris Barlow. Maryborough Speedway only has a few weeks break before the 2009 Queensland V8 Sprintcar Title comes to Maryborough on the June long weekend (6 & 7 June). Night One - Action , action, action... Posted 2nd May, 2009 Night one of the Speedway had plenty of action, and plenty of thrills and spills. The V8 Dirt Modifieds put on some fantastic racing with The Australian Champion winning the first of two Features, and former Australian Champion Scott Cannon from Newcastle winning the second Feature. The V8 Dirt Modifieds are back on Sunday night with two more rounds of heats and the all important 30 lap King of the Ring. The Formula 500's provided plenty of action with heaps of great side by side racing and plenty of rollovers during the night. In the Prem. Feature race, the crowd saw 4 different cars rollover in the one of the biggest Formula 500 crashes ever seen at the venue. Queensland Champion Mick Pronger won the Prem. feature. The Formula 500's back for 2 more rounds on Sunday night with of heats and a 30 lap Queensland Nationals feature race. The Super Streets returned to Maryborough with some nail biting racing. Andrew Roberts won the feature race from Neil Keldoulis ahead of Tony Gaunt. The Dwarf Cars / Mod Lites feature race was won by Queensland Champion Anthony Chaffey. The 4 Cylinder Sedan final was taken out by Tim Weir. Sunday night sees all the action start at 4pm. On the program on Sunday night is V8 Dirt Modifieds, Formula 500's, 40 Modified Productions for the final round of the G&W Racing Series and the Nostalgia Sedans. Don't forget that we will also have four rides in the G&W Racing 2 seater V8 Sprintcar. "Sunday night is Speedway night" Who will be King ??? Posted 1st May, 2009 by Ben Graham V8 Dirt Modifieds return to the Maryborough Speedway this Saturday and Sunday night for the second running of the V8 Dirt Modified ‘King of the Ring’. With $15,000 up for grabs over two nights, the King of the Ring is the richest V8 Dirt Modified event on the Queensland calendar. Heading the list of nominations is in-form Australian Champ Peter Britten. The 21-year old Britten recently added the Victorian Title to his season tally and comes to Maryborough in search of his first Feature win at the venue. Darren Latimer was a popular victor earlier this season at Maryborough, holding out American driver Jimmy Phelps in the opening round of the Roosters Cup series. With a pair of victories to his name this season, Latimer is expected to be amongst the front runners come Feature time on Sunday night. Luke Oldfield took out the inaugural King of the Ring last season and would like nothing more than to add this years event to his tally. Victory in the Queensland Title earlier this season saw Oldfield return to the winners circle, his first aboard his self-constructed racecar. A surprise entrant this weekend is Sprintcar driver and former Australian Modified Production Champ Peter Lack, who will be piloting the Super Rooster entry of fellow Toowoomba resident Ray Klarich. Add to the mix former Australian Champions Mark Robinson and Scott Cannon, Victorian ace Steve Milthorpe, and Andrew Drake and Andrew Pezzutti, and the scene is set for a ‘King of the Ring’ corker! A awesome field of 36 Formula 500's will contest the 'Stallard' Queensland Nationals and the field is headed by the 17 year old "teenage sensation' Brock Hallett who is the current Australian Champion. He will be looking to continue his red hot form, however he will have very tough opposition with a red hot instate contingent. West Aussie's Steven Gay and Jason Priolo are on the way over the Nullabor, add to this New South Wales flyers Steve Caunt, Matt Brown and Chris Alcorn. From Victoria is the man who captured the Aussie title right here in Maryborough a couple of season's ago Ben McLeod. Throw in all the Queensland stars like the Prongers, Shilleto, Korte, Muscat, Iverson and a whole host of others and this is will be as good as any Formula 500 Title. Throw in Super Streets, 4 Cylinders and Dwarf Cars on Saturday night and then 40 Modified Productions for the final round of the G&W Racing Series and Nostalgia Sedans on Sunday night and this is one of the biggest weekends of the season so far. Don't forget that on Sunday night you could win one of four rides of your life in a 2 Seater V8 Sprintcar. Racing starts both nights at 4pm SHARP. |
