American Driver Jimmy Phelps, Primed for Maryborough debut

Posted 29th January, 2009

By Ben Graham

American V8 Dirt Modified driver Jimmy Phelps will be hoping to end his whistlestop two-race Australian tour in a winning note this Saturday night at the Maryborough Speedway when he takes on a strong Queensland contingent in the opening round of the Roosters Cup series. Phelps, from Baldwinsville (NY), had a disastrous outing at the Lismore (NSW) Speedway last weekend where a major accident and ongoing fuel problems ruined his weekend.

“ Last weekend was one of those deals where we got off on the wrong foot and got behind” recalled Phelps. “ It doesn’t matter what you are racing, when you get behind and your up against this level of competition, its hard to fight back from that”.

Phelps is campaigning a specially themed American-made Troyer racecar for Gold Coast racer Simon Jupe.

“ Simon did tell me that Maryborough will be a little more like the tracks we are used to at home which is comforting” said Phelps. “Being from central New York we are pretty fortunate, we have a real big variety of racetracks, we’ve got everything from a quarter mile to the Syracuse mile all within a couple of hour drive so we see just about everything during the year. But one of my favourite tracks here is Brewerton speedway, which is probably a little  bigger than a quarter mile but its tight and its narrow and its probably one on the favourite tracks we go to so I am hoping there will be some similar characteristics”

Racing occupies most of Phelps’ time between February and October each year, campaigning his family-owned Andy Phelps Motorsport entry up to three nights a week in addition to running the Troyer ‘house car’ for the H & H Motorsport outfit on the gruelling 26-round Super DIRTcar Series.

“It’s a tough deal time wise for sure” said Phelps. “It doesn’t leave a lot of free time with going to work all day and then working on the weekend cars all night then a few nights a week we take off to race at different tracks so it is pretty hectic. My typical weekly schedule is Fulton Speedway on Saturday night and Cayuga County Fair speedway in Weedsport on Sunday night and we probably run half the season at Brewerton on Fridays. Then the Super DIRTcar Series is another 26 races. But I am real fortunate with the H & H Motorsport program that they have got a full-time crew up there to take care of the racecars, that frees me up to do my stuff during the week. Working on both (weekly and Series cars) and working a full time job- well you wouldn’t be able to do it”

V8 Dirt Modified racing in America is serious business, and the H & H Motorsport outfit for which Phelps drives has a variety of cars at its disposal, each suited to a different size racetrack.

“They have a big block and a small block ‘Syracuse’ (one mile) car which we have had for the past few years and we just freshen up each year for Super Dirt Week” explained Phelps. “ We try to have 2 short track cars so usually we have four to five cars on the go at one time” And that’s in addition to the Andy Phelps Motorsport cars he campaigns between Friday and Sunday!

Phelps returns to the United States on Monday where he will finalise preparations for an expected 80-race American season.

What a night it will be with a big field of Formula 500's contesting the Qld Stampede Series, Junior Street Sedans, Nostalgia Sedans and a massive field of Street Sedans (which will see the Fraser Coast Chronicle Sports Editor: Richard Harvey, will have the ride of his life in the passenger's seat of Maryborough flyer, Travis Hutchison).

Racing starts at 4pm this Saturday night.  As always the FREE jumping for the kids will be in operation a long with full bar and canteen facilities.  Admission is FREE for kids under 12, and adults are only $22.

Saturday night is Speedway night...

Congratulations Charlie Brown - New Aussie Junior Champion

Posted 18th January, 2009

Brisbane's Charlie Brown has just raced home to win the 2009 Australian Junior Sedan Title that was held at Mildura Speedway in Victoria.  Brown started from position 14 in the final and chased down the front runners.  Over the last 6 laps of the final, Brown and Victorian Ty Galley ran side by side in one of the greatest junior finals ever seen to win the 2009 Australian Junior Sedan Championship.

Maryborough's Mitch Thomsen won a trilling B Main which put him into the A Main, starting from position 17.  Thomsen was running well when he had made his way up into tenth position when he got caught up in a minor incident which the race officials put Thomsen to the rear of the field.  Thomsen fought on, to finish a creditable 14th.

The Maryborough club was also represented well by Kayla Barron and Hamish Redman.  Barron was looking for a solid finish in her final heat to put her into the C Main, but unfortunately Kayla got a flat tyre, putting an early end to her Junior Title campaign.  Hervey Bay's Hamish Redman started the C Main from pole position after changing an engine during night one of the title, but unfortunately Redman got pushed out of contention in the C Main during a first lap crash.

Maryborough's three drivers can be very proud of their achievements at the Australian Junior Title at Mildura and the Maryborough Sporting Car Club would like to congratulate them on flying the flag for Maryborough in such a professional way.

Once again, from everyone at the Maryborough Speedway, congratulations to Charlie Brown, the new Australian Junior Sedan Champion.

Working Bee - this Saturday Afternoon

Posted 15th January, 2009

We will be having a working bee this Saturday (17th January) afternoon commencing at 12:30pm.  We have to erect some new shade sails next to the bar and canteen, finish off putting up the rest of the shade cloth on the catch fence around the rest of the track and complete a few other small tasks.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

American's dominate the V8 Sprintcar Wide Bay Grand Prix

Posted 28th December, 2008

Californian Brent Kaeding has raced home to the V8 Sprintcar Wide Bay Grand Prix in an action packed night of racing at Maryborough Speedway.

A record crowd of well over 5000 people filled the Maryborough Speedway to see what can only be described as a sensational night of racing.

Kaeding was too good in the 30 lap feature race, as he held off a late challenge from Andrew Scheuerle who was very fast during the back end of the feature race.  Pennsylvanian Mike Carber rounded out the top three with a solid performance.

With the hot lead up to the event the track wasn't as fast as organisers had hoped but still Brent Kaeding set the fastest lap of the night of a 11.336 seconds which is only .2 off the lap record.  During the heats the racing was fast and furious with plenty of action and nail biting finishes.

V8 Supercar driver Paul Morris, made a spectacular entry to the race track around 3pm as he landed in the pits in his private helicopter.  It was something like out of a movie, as he circled the race track then landed in the pits when then he was swamped by all the fans.  Morris who is starting to get a handle at Sprintcar racing, failed to qualify for the A Main, but is looking forward to getting back and racing at Maryborough Speedway.

Tim Garrett, Darby Salmon, Darren Jensen, Tony Wynne and Murray Gibson all rode out rollovers but all walked away unhurt.

The Modified Production was the last feature of the night, and it was definitely worth the wait.  Aussie Champ Todd Doyle got away to an early lead but with the high and low lines that had developed from the Sprintcars, saw a bunch of about 8 or 9 cars all battling it out top and bottom for a podium position in Round of the Fraser Coast Series.  Aidan Raymont persisted with the high line and was able to get passed Doyle, from there Raymont did what he needed to do to take a trilling win.  further back in the pack, there was4 or 5 passes for position every lap and Gavin Lorensen ended up finishing second ahead of the Aussie Champ Todd Doyle.

Maryborough Scott Harth took out a trilling Litre Sprintcar Wide Bay Title by beating home Keith Blatch and Sid Whittaker.  16 cars started the feature race that went green to chequered without any stoppages, and Harth in the new Andrew Shilleto race car held of all challenges to win what was a popular win in front of his home town.  Earlier in the night, Harth started his final heat from the back of the field and on the last corner of the last lap blew around the outside of Bruce Ayers to take the win to the spine chilling roars from the record crowd.

Brisbane's Charlie Brown took the win in the Junior feature from Maryborough's Mitch Thomsen and Hervey Bay's Hamish Redman.  In the 4 Cylinder Sedan feature race, Hervey Bay's Paul Redman was awarded the win after crashing out on the final lap after making contact with another car causing him to crash heavily into the back straight fence.  Bevan Burton finished second ahead of Hervey Bay's 65 year old Trevor "Big Revving Trev" Troth.

The Maryborough Speedway now has a 5 week break until it's next meeting on 31 January when the awesome V8 Dirt Modifieds return to Maryborough for the Rooster's Cup.  American Jimmy Phelps will feature that night along with the likes of Mark Robinson, Andrew Pezzutti and Luke Oldfield.

Huge Nominations & Huge Fireworks all for this Saturday night

Posted 22nd December, 2008

They will all be trying to get a piece of the $15,000 in prize money up for grabs and also try to be the first driver on the Maryborough track to go into the 10 second bracket.  With the current lap record sitting at 11.110 seconds (which equates to around 180 - 190 km/p down the straights), all the drivers are keen to break into un-chartered territory and break into that allusive 10 second bracket.

Kaeding set for the V8 Sprintcar "Wide Bay Grand Prix"

Posted 20th December, 2008

When you ask anyone in American about Sprintcar drivers, one name automatically pops into peoples heads.... Kaeding, Brent Kaeding.  The 51 year American Superstar has won just about everything there is too win in V8 Sprintcars.  Although not competing full time on the World of Outlaws circuit in the last couple of seasons, when he has popped in for an event or two, he has always finished at the pointy end of the field.  Kaeding has been running his local track championships in California, where he continues to win feature race after feature race.  Kaeding even tried his hand a NASCAR's in the early 90's, competing in numerous Winston Cup races.

It just isn't his massive amount of feature race wins, but it has been his live wire, heart in your mouth racing style that has captured the attention of Sprintcar lovers throughout his career.  Kaeding can't wait to sink his teeth into the action at the Maryborough Speedway next Saturday night, and has assured Maryborough officials, that he isn't coming here to run second.

Kaeding hails from Campbell in California and when the Yank hits Maryborough, you can be sure the show stopper is in town...

Carber is ready to fire in the V8 Sprintcar "Wide Bay Grand Prix"

Posted 17th December, 2008

American Super Star Mike Carber, is ready and raring to go, in the V8 Sprintcar "Wide Bay Grand Prix" to be held at Maryborough Speedway next Saturday night.

Mike Carber hails from Pipersville in Pennsylvania and started racing at the early age of four in Quarter Midgets.  During his younger years and as a young teenager, Carber dominated the American Junior seen with over 500 heat and feature races wins.  Only a couple of season ago, Carber made the jump from 600 Micro-Sprints to V8 Sprintcars, running a full time deal in the Steve Miller Motorsports Lost Creek Carts #22Z.  Not only did Carber have feature wins at Williams Grove Speedway, New Egypt Speedway, Trailways Speedway, Susquehanna Speedway and Brisbane International Speedway, Carber was also awarded the "Checkered Flag Fan Club Most Improved Open Wheel Driver for 2007".  He also finished 2nd in the URC drivers points, and was runner-up in the Pennsylvania URC Points Championship.  Carber also had some top five finishes in World of Outlaws feature races.  Not a bad for someone that is only 21 years of age.

Regarded as one of America's next "big things", come next Saturday night you can count on Mike Carber putting on a show at the Maryborough Speedway.

Records tumble in the best night of racing seen in a long, long time

Posted 30th November, 2008

Victorian flyer Harley Bishop has raced home to win, in a feature race described by Speedcar officials as the best feature race ever seen anywhere in this country.  Throughout the entire 30 lap race, Sydney pair Troy Jenkins & Mark Brown were battling for the lead and on the last lap Brown and Jenkins rubbed wheels, which was enough for Harley Bishop to jump to the lead and take the Round 3 win.

Earlier in the night Mark Brown smashed the old one lap record by over one whole second.  From 13.993 seconds down to an amazing 12.933 seconds.  The racing from the Midget Speedcars was absolutely amazing all night long.

The records continued to fall in the Formula 500's with Nathan Pronger setting a new one lap record of 12.802 seconds.  Nathan also won the feature race, but his father Mick who started from last position in the final, finished second and with the passing points took the Round 3 win.  The feature race was marred by a massive rollover by Maryborough's Wayne Moller, who had a steering component break, sending him into a violent crash which saw him as high as the windows in the control tower (4 meters in the air).  Moller walked away battered and bruised but ready to come back for more in a couple of weeks.

The record breaking laps didn't stop there with Gympie's Jason Slade bettering the Street Sedan lap record with a new time of 16.402 seconds.  Maryborough's Travis Hutchison also went under the old lap record time with 16.483 seconds but Slade's time will be added into the record books.  Maryborough Steve Thomsen took the feature win in a night that also saw his son Mitchell Thomsen win the Junior Street Sedan final.

Due to running overtime after a fence repair and 5 or 6 rollovers during the night, the Super Street final was cut short after more big crashes that saw Steve Cook taken to hospital with a possible broken hand.  There feature was declared after only 3 laps as the time had clicked to 11:15pm.

All in all, last night's racing was a good as anyone has seen for many, many years and Speedcar Officials are looking forward to returning bigger and better at Easter for the 2009 Qld Midget Speedcar Title.

Maryborough now holds a practice night next Saturday night & then kicks into high gear for the USA V8 Sprintcar Spectacular featuring over 25 drivers plus three American Superstars Mike Carber, Tim Kaeding & Brent Kaeding on December 27.

Weather Update #2 - Yes, we are definitely still on...

Posted 29th November, 2008

6:30am - We are going racing...

Maryborough has only received one or two light showers overnight and the complex & track is primed and ready for the masses to take to it for Round 3 of the National Speedcar Super Series.

The sky is clearing in the south with parts of blue skies, and with the strong winds around any possible rain or showers should blow past very quickly.  So we are confident that we will get in a full night of racing tonight which will start at 4pm.

So load up the car and pack the kids because we are set for a cracker at the Maryborough Speedway tonight.

Weather Update #1 - Yes, we are still on...

Posted 28th November, 2008

6:00pm - The Maryborough Speedway officials are happy how things are progressing and due to Maryborough only having one of two very light showers things are looking great.  The track crew are confident that even if we receive moderate overnight rain that extends into the morning, the track will hold up fine and should see racing going ahead at the scheduled time of 4pm.

Stay tuned for Weather Update #2 in the morning...

Brown looking to extend his National Super Series Lead

Posted 26th November, 2008

Sydney's Mark Brown is chomping at the bit to have a crack at the Maryborough Speedway and is looking to continue his perfect start to the National Speedcar Super Series.  He has won the opening two rounds and hasn't looked like losing after scoring big wins at Brisbane and Toowoomba. He has just about won every race in the country and is currently rated as the number one driver in the nation.

Brown hasn't ever raced at the Maryborough Speedway, but is looking forward to racing on the super fast race track, along with the rest of the 30 plus field competing this Saturday night in Round 3 of the National Speedcar Super Series.

Brown will be joined by fellow New South Welshmen Nathan Smee, Peter Bourke, Tony Abson, Anthony O'Brien, Matt Young and Troy Jenkins and all are keen to take another feature win away from the Queenslanders on home soil.

The rest of the country will be represented well with Dene McAllan and Neville Lance flying the flag for Western Australia, Peter Ghent will be the lone Victorian and Mark Harrington, John McKay, Ben Dillion making the trek north from South Australia.

This Saturday night's show will also see an international flavour with New Zealand hotshots, Stevie Walsh and Jimi Quinn ready to stick it to the Aussie's.

A whole host of Queenslanders including former Australian Sprintcar Champion Todd Wanless along with the likes to Dean, Draney, George, Palmer, Harders and plenty of others and this will be the biggest night of Midget Speedcar racing ever seen at the Maryborough Speedway.

The night will be supported by Round 3 of the Hyper Racing Qld Formula 500 Stampede Series, and an excellent field of 25 cars has nominated.  Super Streets, Street Sedans and Junior Streets will make up the rest of the program.  All the action gets underway at 4pm and as normal a full canteen and bar will be in operation as well as the now-famous FREE jumping castle.

A special threat for some of the children in the area with race cars doing the rounds of some of the primary schools on Friday.  If you miss out there, the Midget Speedcars will also have displays in town on Saturday morning at Station Square Shopping Centre and Bob Jane T-Mart.

Wanless confirmed for Midget Speedcar Super Series

Posted 19th November, 2008

V8 Sprintcar superstar Todd Wanless has confirmed that he will be at Maryborough Speedway in the Sydney's based Fox Racing Team Midget Speedcar for the upcoming round of the Super Series to be held next Saturday night (29th November).

Wanless is no stranger to Midget racing and for many seasons has done plenty of shows right around the country and has always finished at the pointy end of the field. Wanless was running strongly at the opening round of the National Series until he got caught up in an incident.  Wanless also performed well last weekend at Parramatta where it finished inside the top six.

It has been said that Wanless who is a former Australian Sprintcar Champion, is much more suited to Midget Speedcars rather then V8 Sprintcars where he won been so successful for so many years.

It is great news for Maryborough fans, and great news for Round 3 of the National Speedcar Super Series, where nominations have already gone over 30.

Maryborough rookie's, Tyler Mertin & Kurt Murdoch appear in Street Machine

Posted 18th November, 2008

Maryborough rookie's Tyler Mertin & Kurt Murdoch appear in the latest issue of one of the countries biggest car magazine, Street Machine.  A full page with pictures story talks about how both Tyler and Kurt (both still at school) have gone about getting into their first season of Speedway racing at Maryborough Speedway racing in Street Sedans and Junior Streets.

It is great to see young blood coming into the sport and it great that they went out of there way and sent a story to Street Machine and it was published.

From everyone at the Maryborough Sporting Car Club well done to Tyler and Kurt, keep up the good work, and I am sure the on track results will come.

National Speedcar Super Series count down begins...

Posted 9th November, 2008

In just under 3 weeks, the biggest Midget Speedcar event ever held in Maryborough will erupt for Round 3 of the National Super Series.

Over 30 drivers are set to tackle to the Maryborough Speedway and those drivers include the biggest names in Midget racing in this country and New Zealand.

New Zealand Superstar, Stevie "the Kiwi Kid" Walsh is looking forward to taking on the countries finest Midget drivers at Maryborough Speedway on 29th November.

Leading the charge is reigning SSS Champion Mark ‘Browndog’ Brown in his new recognizable pink mean-machine from the Rinkin Motorsports stable along with fellow New South Welshmen Troy Jenkins, Tony Abson, Mark Cooper, Matt Young, Peter Bourke, 07-08 NSW Rookie of the Year Anthony Brien, & TPCR 50 Lap Speedcar victor Nathan Smee.

Meanwhile, three cars hit the road from South Australia to take on the Northern States for opening round glory; including the three contracted stars John McKay, Ben Dillon and Midget newcomer Mark Harrington! Plus one can’t overlook the talented Victorian representatives Peter Ghent Jnr & Brad Jackson, and contracted West Aussie legend, Neville Lance making the trek north for the third round win!

But will the challenging interstaters be able to hold off the expert local guns from the Sunshine state? This year sees Queensland’s strongest contingent ever with the likes of Grant Draney, Neale Tobin, Brock Dean, Mick Harders, Ross Mason, John Lennon and Brendan Palmer; all signed on for the SSS contracted long-haul!!

Joining the Qlder's and bringing an international flavour to the SSS this season are Kiwi imports Jimi Quinn and Stevie Walsh! Walsh is no newcomer to the SSS having previously campaigned with the NSW-based Bourke team in 2006-2007; whilst Quinn, who drove to an impressive 3rd in the 08 TPCR 50 Lap Speedcar Classic; has spent countless hours behind the wheel throughout New Zealand and the United States and is sure to impress in this talent-laden field.

Through in a whole host of other Midget drivers and this will be the biggest Speedcar event ever held at the legendary Maryborough Speedway.  For more information on the Speedcar Super Series visit their website by clicking on the logo below.

Mother Nature wins again...

Posted 2nd November, 2008

Mother Nature has won again at Maryborough Speedway.  During the final round of heats and after 24 fantastic events, freak showers swept across the venue causing the race surface to dangerous and non-race able.  Although very damp conditions, the racing kept going, but only resulted in cars spinning out in the very slippery conditions.

After about 20 minutes of showers, the V8 Super Sedans went out onto the track to try and track pack but while the 30+ field of V8 Super Sedans where rolling around and another heavy shower swept across the venue, giving officials not other option but to cancel the race meeting.

It was a real shame, as over 2500 people from Cairns to Coffs Harbour had made the journey to Maryborough for Rnd 2 of the V8 Super Sedan Championship Series.

In the early heat races spectators were treated to some fantastic racing with plenty of action, plenty of passing and plenty of entertainment.  Darren Kane, Tania Smith, Peter Warren and Ian Brims where all looking really good, with solid performances in there heat races.

In the Midget Speedcars, New Zealand Superstars showed why they are the finest in the business as both had convincing wins in there respective heats.  Steve Walsh (NZ) set a new lap record for the Midgets with a 13.993 second lap.  Brett Foreman had a massive rollover along the back straight safety fence after making heavy contact with the wall causing his machine to go into a wild series of barrel rolls right in front of the big crowd.  (Brett was un-injured in the crash).

In the Street Sedans, Maryborough's Steve Thomsen & Gympie's Kristian Walker were equal top points scores after the Street Sedan heats and looked like they may of been headed for a big night in the 50 lapper.

The Maryborough Speedway now turns it attention to November 29th when over 30 of the very best Midget Speedcar drivers in the country turn on for the National Speedcar Super Series.

Monster fields this Saturday night

Posted 28th October, 2008

A record breaking field of 36 V8 Super Sedans are set for the green flag this Saturday night at Maryborough Speedway for Round 2 of the Bergmeier Engineering Super Sedan Championship Series and the Red Devil Radiator Development Series.

The field is full of the very best drivers not only in the Queensland but in the country.  Queensland Champion Darren Kane, lap record holder (13.894 seconds) Matt Pascoe, New South Wales Champion Wayne Brims, New South Wales superstars Ian Brims and Tania Smith along with a whole host of others will be looking for big points and taking home the cash this Saturday night.  A few other notable entries are two North Queensland Modified Production drivers Johnno Collins and Chris Jensen.  Both of these drivers have shown plenty of form in 6 cylinders, but they will have an extra to cylinders under there right feet and a powerful 600 horsepower to handle when they hit the track on Saturday night.

The mighty Midget Speedcars make a return to Maryborough Speedway for an all important hit out before the National Series comes to town later in the month.  17 drivers including New Zealand superstars Jimi Quinn and Stevie Walsh lead the nominations and both showed plenty of speed at Archerfield last weekend at the first round of the National Series.  Another driver that performed very well last weekend and will be one to watch is Grant Draney who raced home in second place in the 30 car field.  It has been many years since Maryborough has witnessed such a fantastic lineup of cars and this weekend the 17 drivers are all keen to be first to meet the chequered flag.

51 Street Sedans and 11 Nostalgia Sedan make up the massive night of action.  Gates open at 1pm and racing will kick off at 4pm SHARP.  42 events have been programmed so don't miss a minute of the action this Saturday night at Maryborough Speedway.  Entry for Kids under 12 are still FREE and the ever popular FREE jumping castle will once again be in operation.

General Meeting - 22nd October, 2008

Posted 14th October, 2008

The Maryborough Sporting Car Club is holding a general meeting next Wednesday night (22nd October, 2008), in the control tower commencing at 7:30pm.  The meeting will be to accept the financial audit from the 07/08 season.  The meeting should only take 10 minutes and will be followed by the fortnightly Committee meeting.

Raymont Quinella in the Dash 4 Cash

Posted 11th October, 2008

Aidan Raymont has raced home to beat his brother Mark in the Modified Production Dash 4 Cash held at the Maryborough Speedway tonight.

Under very dark and gloomy skies, the race meeting went ahead as planned from 4pm and with the few showers that we did have and the overcast skies, the track was super fast and provided some of the best racing ever seen at the Maryborough Speedway.

Unfortunately due to the wet weather in Hervey Bay and right down the coast, only a small crowd of 500 people fronted for the race meeting.

Australian champ Todd Doyle, who crashed out in the feature race, set a new one lap record with a 15.443 second lap.  Doyle was ecstatic with the lap record and happy the record has come back to Queensland.

Gavin Fletcher had a night he would rather forget after riding out a massive rollover in turn one in the opening laps of his third heat.  Fletcher walked away unhurt but the same can't be said about the XF Falcon he was driving, as it was destroyed.

Wondai's Neil Harm captured his second feature race win in as many meetings after winning the 20 lap Street Sedan final in convincing style. Harm lead from Green to Checker and was never troubled, although the rest of the field battled to stay on the track with only 8 of the 22 starters finishing the final.

The Junior Street Sedan final was run and won by Maryborough's Mitch Thomsen who drove a really controlled race.  Thomsen stayed out of trouble and brought the AU Falcon home in front.  Kingaroy's Jason Hadley left more then a mark on the Maryborough track, when he had a massive crash into the pit gate.  The impact was that big, it bent the pit gate like a banana, destroying the solid steel gate.  Hadley walked away unhurt, but his commodore might have seen its last race.

Townsville's Justin Freeman took out the Compact Speedcar feature and John Cariola took out the Litre Sprintcar A Main.  In the Compact Speedcars Darren Vine and Rob Stewart finished the night in the upside club after both rolling in separate accidents.

The Maryborough Speedway now has a 3 week break, before kicking back into gear on 1st November for the V8 Super Sedan (Qld Series), Midget Speedcars, Street Sedan (Mary 1000 - 50 lapper) and Nostalgia Sedans.

We are definitely still on

Posted 11th October, 2008

Maryborough Speedway is definitely still on and we go ahead as programmed tonight from 4pm.  The sun has come out and the showers are gone, so Maryborough Speedway will kick into high gear from 4pm this afternoon for the Modified Production Dash 4 Cash.

Overnight the track only hardly any rain, so everything is in perfect order for a great night of racing.

Yes we are still ON!!!

Posted 10th October, 2008

Yes, the Maryborough Speedway is still on !!!

Although the region has seen a few showers this afternoon, the Maryborough Speedway will go ahead as planned from 4pm tomorrow (Saturday). In fact, the track crew have just left the complex which has hardly had any rain today and they still had to water the track, water the infield and the pits to settle the dust.

The forecast for Saturday is a possible clearing shower in the morning and then sunshine by lunch.

See you tomorrow at the Maryborough Speedway, where "Saturday night is Speedway night".

Aussie Champion Todd Doyle is back for the Dash 4 Cash

Posted 7th October, 2008

The current Australian Champion Todd Doyle will make his return to Maryborough Speedway this Saturday night taking on a 'red-hot' field in the Modified Production 'Dash 4 Cash'.

A fantastic field of 23 cars has nominated and the field boasts some of the best drivers in the country.  Picking a winner in the Melbourne Cup would be easier than picking one this Saturday night.

After winning the 2008 Australian & Queensland Titles both held at Maryborough Speedway last season, Doyle is ready and raring to go, to kick start his 08/09 season with a solid finish this Saturday night.

The field includes the current New South Wales Champion Steve Price and former Queensland Champion Aidan Raymont who is coming off a big win at Mothar Mountain Speedway a couple of weeks ago.  Aidan's brother Mark, has stepped up from the Cortina to the Falcon and is hoping the Falcon will prove successful for him this season.

Another man that should be feeling confident is Gympie's Glenn Pagel who won Rnd 1 of the Fraser Coast Modified Production Series at the season opener in Maryborough last month.  Pagel was the fastest car on the night, but Brisbane's Garry Maroske in the little Mazda RX7, was also flying and won all three of his heat races.

Maryborough will be represented by former Australian #3 Steve Thomsen, Steven Zahl and Brendan Bayfield.  All drivers will counting home track advantage and looking forward to the local crowd cheering them home.

Saturday night will bring plenty of action to the Maryborough Speedway with a good field of Litre Sprintcars and Compact Speedcars.  Also on the program is a staggering field of Street Sedans with close to 40 cars nominated.  Junior Street Sedans make up the monster program.

All the racing action gets underway at 4pm with a full canteen and bar in operation. Adult admission is only $22 and Children under 12 are still FREE and the FREE jumping castle is back for the little ones.  The meeting should finish by 10:30pm.

Pagel takes opening round of Fraser Coast Series

Posted 21st September, 2008

Gympie's Glenn Pagel has raced home to win the opening round of the Fraser Coast Series.  On a fantastic flat and fast race track, Pagel held of challenges from Garry Maroske, Steve Thomsen, Adrian Stott and Dennis Shallcross to record his first win in the new "Geritz Earthmoving" commodore.  During the feature race Pagel was less then 2 tenths of a second of Andrew Blackwell's lap record.  Pagel finished ahead of Adrian Stott with Garry Maroske finishing in third.

The feature race was full of action with some fantastic drives on the top and bottom of the race track.  John Shelford had a start to his Modified Production career he would rather forget after hitting the fence hard causing his commodore to rollover. Shelford was okay, but his Holden sustained major damage in the front end.

The Monster Trucks where a big hit with the kids, and both trucks just about self destructed as Aussie Predator did a huge jump in his second show and went ever so close to rolling over.  Bear Foot USA was a crowd favourite with his awesome donuts on the infield.

Ace Fireworks said that they would put on one awesome firework shows and they didn't disappoint.  The final Fireworks shows was truly amazing and had everyone wanting more with a brilliant display or fireworks never seen before in Australia.

A big field of Street Sedans lined up for the night and didn't they turn it on.  From the outset the crowd saw plenty of wheel rubbing & panel thumping.  Maryborough's Keryn Goodwin had a mixed night as he crashed out in the feature race after trying to avoid a crash and ended up smashing into the back of Steve Thomsen, but earlier in the night Keryn Goodwin set a new Street Sedan lap record with 16.536 seconds.  The action packed A Main was taken out by Neil Harm from Russell Cowley and Kieralee Pearce.

Josh Harm won the Junior Street Sedan final in style from a very fast finishing Ryan Packer and Brisbane's Charlie Brown took out the Junior Sedan feature from Jayden Peacock and Maryborough's Mitch Thomsen.

Other winners during the night where Tony Gablonski in the Nostalgia Sedans, Mick Pronger in the Formula 500's and Al Mathers took out the 4 Cylinder feature that was action a plenty in the closing laps.

Maryborough Speedway now has a 3 week break before kicking back into high gear for the Modified Production Dash 4 Cash, and a big field of the very best drivers in the state will be here to battle it out for the big bucks on offer.

Throw in a fantastic lineup of cars in Junior Sedans, 4 Cylinders, Junior Streets and Nostalgia Sedans, and this will be one monster meeting this Saturday night at the Maryborough Speedway.

Racing starts at 4pm, with the Monster Trucks making there first appearance at approx. 6:30pm and the show should finish around 10:30pm.  Gates open at 1pm and full bar and canteen facilities are at the track.  Don't forget the Free jumping castle for the kids.

Vandals strike at Maryborough Speedway!!!

Posted 1st September, 2008

Last night vandal's have broken into the Maryborough Speedway and destroyed two windows on the main canteen.  A police spokesperson has said that thankfully the Chris Jones Security Alarm System has scared off the vandal's, not before the thieves had broken the windows and frames to the canteen.

On a quick inspection, it seems that nothing has been stolen, but courtesy of these grubs, the club now has a repair bill to attend to and fix the broken windows and frames.

Police forensics where able to get some finger & hand prints so hopefully that will lead them to these grubs.

If anyone has any information that could help police, please contact the Maryborough Police Station.

Upgrades at Maryborough Speedway still Continue

Posted 28th August, 2008

During the off season the Maryborough Speedway has been franticly working on the upgrades to the complex.

The power upgrades to the track included the installation of new power lines, some new track lighting and the increased power supply to the machinery shed & canteen, is under going it's final stages and is due for completion in the next week.

The turn three spectator area is currently going under a revamp, with increased terraced areas allowing for the expected increase in fans,  to be able to pack into the Maryborough Speedway during the massive 08/09 season.

The track safety fence has also been upgraded with an extra "safety cable" being added right around the top of the catch fence.  This will increase strength and to ensure the safety of all patrons at the Maryborough Speedway.

The club will also be trialing a see-through fabric on the catch fence which should decrease the amount of mud etc going into the crowd.  If the trial areas work well, plans are to install this right around the entire track.

The countdown to the one of the biggest seasons on record at the Maryborough Speedway is now only three weeks away, so get yourselves ready because "Saturday night is Speedway night".

Sorry!!!

Posted 8th June, 2008

The Maryborough Sporting Car Club would like to apologise for the disappointing end to what was a sensational weekend of racing at the Maryborough Speedway for the running of the "Ezy Clean Skips" Queensland Modified Production Title.

Firstly, the Maryborough Speedway wanted to finish the running of the Queensland Title, no matter what!!!

Secondly, the Maryborough Speedway did everything in its power to make sure the feature race was restarted and not declared.

After the Qld Officials spoke to the drivers and crews of the cars still in the race, the Qld Officials declared the race not the Maryborough Speedway.

I would like to take this opportunity to clear a few things up, and now it all unfolded.

During the feature a car came around into turn two, his tyre blew, causing his rim to throw a massive piece of clay into the air which hit the power lines causing the power lines to tangling with themselves. Not all the lights went out. The race was brought to Red stoppage.

The Maryborough Speedway and QSCA at this stage stopped all cars on the track, where all drivers stayed in there cars. Ergon Energy was called straight away.

After 15 minutes or so the Maryborough Speedway with the help of the Electrician found the problem, that the tangled power lines caused the transformer to blow the high voltage fuse and now knowing the problem, knew it would be fixed in only minutes, that is Ergon Energy turned up.

While this was going on Wes Beadman went around and told the massive crowd on hand about the problem and we where still trying to continue the meeting (Due to one phase of power, we also lost the track PA, but not the Pit PA). Not many of the crowd moved.

As myself and the executive committee came around to tell drivers and the officials that we will have it fixed within minutes, Todd Doyle was doing his lap of honor with the chequered flag. (Take nothing away from Doyle, as he was dominant all weekend, but Johnno Collins had just reeled in Doyle. Doyle was on the boards and Collins was on the low line racing side by side, to the sounds of the crowd, going nuts. We would of had a grandstand finish, that is for sure...)

At no time, did the Maryborough Speedway ever want to declare the Queensland Modified Production Title. We wanted to run it, but the powers to be, declared the race under exceptional circumstances, after consulting with the drivers and teams still left in the event and under the Duty of Care as they had been in the car for at least 20 minutes.

After Ergon replaced the fuse which took all of about 2 minutes, within 15 minutes, everything came back on and then the club decided to run the Street Sedan Wide Bay 500 and the Demolition Derby.

On behalf of Maryborough Sporting Car Club I would like to apologise for the bitter ending to the "Ezy Clean Skips" Modified Production Title as it was the best Modified Production racing I have ever seen.

I hope that the support from the massive amount of spectators that have come through the gates this season, continue to support this great club in the 2008/2009 season. It was a freak thing that happened and unfortunately it has wrecked, what was an awesome weekend and a sensational season of speedway racing.

Although all the track lighting is only 2 years old, the club will now look into the changing the wiring system of the whole complex to ensure that this 'freak act of god' doesn't ever happen again.

Congratulations must go Gympie's Todd Doyle for winning his second Qld Title, Cairns's Johnno Collins for a super drive in second and Brisbane's Mark Ferguson for finishing third.

"Ezy Clean Skips" Modified Production Title - Night One !!!

Posted 7th June, 2008

Wow, what a night, last night saw the best Modified Production heat racing ever seen on the Maryborough Speedway.  18 qualifying heats were contested and although the grey skies hung around all day, the meeting got underway at 4pm and all events got through without any showers.

For those that said at home, they will be kicking themselves as every single heat was fast and furious with plenty of side by side racing, with plenty of passing and with the track having a few ruts, especially in turn two, a fair few big crashes unfortunately put a few competitors on the trailers early in the night.

After Night One the Top 10 in the "Ezy Clean Skips" Modified Production Title are:

1. Todd Doyle (95) 2. Johnno Collins (92) 3. Daryn Brims (89) 4. Mark Ferguson (87) 5. Steve Thomsen (85) 6. Glenn Pagel (81) 7. Greg Worling (79) 8. Mark Raymont (77) 9. Darryl Etherden (76) 10. Greg Raymont (68)

All the action gets back underway tonight at 4pm with the final round of heats for the Modified Production Qld Title, along with Super Streets, Street Sedans, Junior Street Sedans and the Nostalgia Sedans.

Tonight is Family night and will finish with a huge Demolition Derby.  There is a Free jumping castle, Free giveaways, Free face painting, balloon making and Kids under 12 are Free as well.  A full bar and canteen will be in operation.

"Ezy Clean Skips" Practice Session !!!

Posted 6th June, 2008

Close to 40 cars turned out for tonight's Practice Session at the Maryborough Speedway, for the running of the 2008 "Ezy Clean Skips" Modified Production Title.

Some sensational lap times where put down as the pace on the very grippy Maryborough track was lightning quick.

Aussie Champ Todd Doyle, Queensland Champ Aidan Raymont along with Glen Pagel (debuting the brand new VS Commodore), Gavin Fletcher, Gavin Lorensen and Darren Pearson where all on the pace and all look strong after the 2 hour practice session.

Unfortunately, Bundaberg's Dennis Shallcross has some work to do tonight after crashing heavily into the turn two fence.  Shallcross was unhurt, but has a fair bit of work to do, if he is to take his spot in Heat one Saturday night.

Racing gets underway Saturday afternoon at 4pm with a massive program of non-stop racing action.

It's show time!!!

Posted 5th June, 2008

The 2008 "Ezy Clean Skips" Qld Modified Production Title is set for green, and tomorrow night (Friday) some of the 58 car field will hit the track for the two hour practice session, starting at 6pm.  The bar will be in operation during practice and then after the session has finished we will have the Calcutta and meet and greet at the Black Flagged Bar (at the track).

All the action gets underway proper, at 4pm on Saturday afternoon with 3 rounds of heats for the Modified Productions along with a massive support program.  Over 30 Street Sedans have entered along with a big field of Junior Streets and the Super Street Sedans are back for more.

Sunday night is "Family night" and along with the Free Jumping Castle, Free giveaways, Free face painting, balloon making and Free entry for kids under 12, the night will finish with a Crazy Demolition Derby.  The last car running will pocket a cool $1000.  Along with the final heats for the Modified Productions the support is the same as the night before, but we will add in the ever popular Nostalgia Sedans.  The top 20 Modified Production drivers after a grueling two nights of racing will line up for the 40 lap feature race, where the winner will be crowned the 2008 "Ezy Clean Skips" Queensland Modified Production Champion.

Gates open at 1pm both nights with the twilight racing commencing at 4pm, and all the action should be finished by 10:30pm.

A fantastic Canteen and bar will be in operation both nights, so bring the family and have a great weekend out at the Maryborough Speedway.

Kane wins in a Thriller!!!

Posted 18th May, 2008

Darren Kane has raced home to win a Super Sedan final, described as one of the best ever seen at Maryborough Speedway.

The 30 lap feature race went from green to Chequered without any stoppages and not only was the pace electric, the battle between Kane and Matt Pascoe was unbelievable.

Kane got the jump at the start and flew away to an early lead.  Kane was lapping in the low 14 second bracket (which before this night, the lap record was 14.855 seconds).  At about mid race, Matt Pascoe had closed right up to the back of Kane, and the to went blow for blow through lap traffic.  Pascoe was able to get to the lead and it looked as if he would race away, but with about 5 laps to go, Kane drove right around the outside of Pascoe and was able to hang on to win the final round V8 Super Sedan Series.  Pascoe finished in second and Gavin Northfield had a strong result to finish on third.

Earlier in the night the previous lap record 14.855 seconds held by Mick Doblo but was smashed by Matt Pascoe to set the new time of 13.894 seconds.

In the ASCF Juniors Fraser Cup, Hervey Bay Speedqueen stole the show in the final with a huge rollover.  Barron came around turn one and tried to avoid an tangle between 3 other cars, but as see went high to miss the other cars, her Charade dug in and went into a series to battle rolls.  Barron's roll was that high, she was as high as the top of the catch fence.  Kayla walked away unhurt, and got on the mic and told the crowd she will be back and she wants to go faster.  Amazingly, Kayla was still able to drive her own car off under its own power.  In the feature, Charlie Brown raced home to win his fourth in a row, ahead of his older sister Kristin with Nathan Francis finishing in third.

The Junior Street Sedans also contested the Fraser Coast Cup and Kingaroy's Josh Harm took it out from Michele Blavius and Ben Rossow.

Maryborough's Chris Elliot won an epic Street Sedan feature race that saw 24 cars start and only 7 or 8 finished.  Last start winner Russell Cowley finished second with Maryborough resident Shane Skene finishing third.

Darryl Etherden was top point scorer in the Super Street Sedans and was happy to take the "Back of the Bus" Challenge and start the feature from the rear.  With every car he got passed the crowd cheered louder and louder.  Etherden had got to second went he was deemed the cause of an incident that left another competitor in the wall.  But it was Neil Keldoulis that won the feature race from Mick Budgen and Rockhampton's Darryl Etherden finishing in third.

The Maryborough Speedway will swing back into action in three weeks for the Queensland Modified Production Title to be held over the June Long weekend.
