American Champion: Bud Kaeding coming to town this weekend

Posted 30th December, 2009

American superstar Bud Kaeding is a surprise late nomination for this weekends round of the "Triple X Race Co" Speedcar Super Series.  Kaeding will pilot the Q91 Midget, but to Sprintcar commitments in Brisbane on Friday Night, will only campaign the Midget Speedcar at Maryborough Speedway on Saturday Night only.

This will mean that the current USAC Silver Crown Champion will start his final heat race from the back and then no doubt start towards the back of the B Main.  This will be a huge test for one of the finest wingless drivers ever to grace our shores, but you don't become an American Champion without being able to pass cars.

Maryborough Speedway ready to fire

Posted 29th December, 2009

The Maryborough Speedway is all ready to go for two huge nights of action this Friday and Saturday night.

Although rain has soaked the region over the weekend, it has been a blessing in disguise as track conditions and the surrounding areas have finally got the much needed "drink" that they have been craving.  With two huge nights planned for this Friday and Saturday night, the Maryborough Sporting Car Club now believes we will be able to once again provide competitors with a racy & hooky track which will no doubt provide plenty of great side by side racing and at the same time be able to minimise the dust that has troubled the drought ridden race track over the last couple of race meetings.

The mighty Midget Speedcars return to Maryborough Speedway for two huge nights of action this Friday and Saturday night.  30 of the very best drivers in the country converge on the Fraser Coast to battle out in round four of the National Super Series.

Reining National Super Series Champion Mark Brown from Sydney heads the impressive field and is looking forward to returning to the Maryborough Speedway.

Brown will be joined by fellow New South Welshmen Troy Jenkins and the current Series leader Nathan Smee, along with Western Australian flyers Scott Glazebrook, & Keith Giles, Victorian hard charger and last years winner of the Maryborough round Harley Bishop, South Australia duo Ben Dillon and John McKay and a long and lengthy list of Queenslanders who all are looking at upstaging there visiting counterparts.

Also being contested is Round two of the Fraser Coast Drives Championship for the Modified Productions.  Fraser Coast drivers Steven Zahl, Scott Thomsen & Brendan Bayfield will be face tough opposition from the massive 49 car field.  The opening round was taken out by Glenn Pagel and he is back to try an increase his lead, but the likes of Cairns’s Johnno Collins and Lismore’s Greg Worling only a few points behind him, he will have his work cut out for him.

Friday night see a big field of 28 V8 Super Sedans who will battle it out in the Summer Shoot out. The Lismore lady racer Tania Smith will be joined by fellow New South Welshmen Ian Brims along with some of Queensland finest Steve Peace, Gavin Northfield, Bevan Collins, Matthew Williams, Craig Torr, Chris Jensen and Colin Hockley.   Local hopes rest with Ashley Peall, Barry Grundy and Craig Shaw who are all looking forward to a solid performance infront of there home crowd.

The Maryborough Speedway is extremely looking forward to two big nights of action this weekend.

Midget Speedcars and Modified Productions will contest both nights, with V8 Super Sedans on Friday Night only and Saturday night will also see Street Sedans, Junior Streets and Nostalgia Sedans.  Racing gets underway this Friday night at 5pm and this Saturday at 4:30pm.

Posted 19th December, 2009

Canadian Pete Bicknell has raced home to win the opening round of the Roosters Cup in a feature race that had to be seen to believed.  After a huge crash in the opening round of heats, every spare person in the pits worked overtime to get Bicknell back out on the track.  Bicknell started from position 13 in the feature and drove one of the most memorable feature races even seen at the Maryborough Speedway.

Early race leader Mark Robinson ran away with a big lead, but as the leaders got into lap traffic, Bicknell powered passed Robinson to take the lead.  Peter Britten got into second and Robinson hung on to finish on the podium.

Beenleigh flyer Cody Maroske raced home to win the "Free Flow Cylinder Heads & Engines" Queensland Junior Sedan Title ahead of Victoria Michael Gorman and Justin Smith.

Maryborough's Premier Effort

MARYBOROUGH is fast becoming the place to be seen – for speedway drivers it seems.

Over the past couple of seasons, drivers keen to race on the Tinana track have reached record numbers and this season is proving to be no different.

So much so that Maryborough Sporting Car Club officials have had to add an extra meeting to the 2009-2010 calendar to satisfy those with a need for speed.

A meeting on April 10 has been added and that will feature the final round of the Modified Production Fraser Coast Drivers Championship and the Thunder Series for the V8 Late Models.

April promises to be a big month for Heritage City speedway fans as the week before the new meeting, a huge field of V8 Sprintcars will battle it out in the opening round of the Queensland Easter Trail on Good Friday.

Maryborough Sporting Car Club general manager and race commentator Ryan Harris said there was no doubt Maryborough Speedway is going from strength-to-strength.

“With the ever increasing size of the fields and the crowds we get, Maryborough has become one of the premier race tracks on the eastern seaboard,” Harris said.

“That’s a big call I know but just look at the support we’ve been getting.

“Our car counts are amongst the biggest anywhere in Australia and that’s been proved by the support we get from the drivers and fans from all over the country – it’s simply amazing.

“We now have competitors and spectators travelling from interstate to every single race meeting – it’s fantastic.”

Harris said more than 35,000 spectators came through the gate last season and he reckons that will be beaten this time around.

“We’ve been doing plenty of up-grading and the venue can now comfortably hold 6000 people.

“The future is looking great for us and I reckon that we’ll continue to pack the joint out judging by the support we get.”

McFadden wins the Dash 4 Cash

Posted 14th November, 2009

James McFadden has raced home to win an epic V8 Sprintcar Dash 4 Cash.  McFadden drove a faultless race to win the fifth annual Dash 4 Cash.  Darren Jensen finished second ahead of David Muir.  McFadden was dominant all night, by setting quick time in hotlaps, one his opening heat from the back of the field and led the entire 25 lap feature race.  Adrian O'Connell, Kevin Titman and Tim Garrett all rode rollovers during the night, but all walked away unhurt.

In the Modified Productions, Glenn Pagel won an amazing feature race that had more twists and turns then a packet of Twisties.  Pagel got to the lead with only a handful of laps remaining and early race leader Todd Doyle spun and had to go to the rear of the field.  Lismore Greg Worling finished in second and Cairns superstar Johnno Collins moved up from eight to finish third.

Blake Hancock raced home to the win a sensational 4 Cylinder Sedan feature and Mitch Thomsen raced home ahead of Hamish Redman and Sam Roza.  The feature race was brought to an abrupt end, when Maryborough High School student Brianna Francis had a massive rollover in turns three and four.  Brianna Francis walked away unhurt, but here Charade was a little worse for wear.

All and all it was a fantastic race meeting with plenty of great racing and plenty of trills and spills.

Maryborough Speedway returns on 19th December, for the opening round of the V8 Dirt Modified Roosters Cup.

The attraction of becoming a series champion and the extra prize and bonus money that entails has produced the 50 strong nomination list for the opening rounds. The promoters and sponsors alike have been blown away with the magnificent response from competitors.

Dennis Bagnall, a long time speedway competitor himself, and proprietor of Exide Batteries Nambour states, “Give the competitor something decent to race for and they will all come out to play.”

Ryan Harris of Maryborough Speedway backs this up. “When we started this, we had no idea of the fantastic support that a Fraser Coast Series would receive,” he said. “Masondale Heavy Haulage grabbed the opportunity to be involved. Now Dennis and Exide Batteries Nambour have further increased the size of the pay packet, who knows where we could end up.”

One result is sure and certain; the racing in these series will be hot from go to whoa.  Modified Production racing always produces fast, close panel rubbing action. All nominees are capable of going home with the prize, however, some of the more fancied starters in the series are-

- Shane MacDonald from Charlton Raceway, who is the current Queensland Champion.
- Todd Doyle from Gympie who has two Australian Titles as well as state titles to his credit.
- Aidan Raymont from Gympie who is a multi state award winner.
- Mark Raymont from Gympie who is also a multi state award winner.
- Greg Worling from NSW, who is also a multi award winner on the National and State scenes.
- Steve Price from Sunshine Coast Club who is the current New South Wales Champion.
- Johnno Collins from Cairns who is a multi award winner.

This is only a small sample of the talent on show in the series and is by no means conclusive.
It will be a brave punter indeed who names any one of the 50 competitors entered in round one of both series as a standout favourite.

Best tip – Sit back folks and enjoy the action.

Dean Hawkins wins opening round of Thunder Series

Posted 28th September, 2009

Brisbane's Dean Hawkins has written his name into the history books by being the winner of the opening round of the Late Model Thunder Series.  Infront of a big crowd of over 2000, Hawkins was able to hold the lone New South Welshmen Neil Wallace to second place.

The Late Models put on some excellent racing during the heats and in the opening stages of the feature race, early favourite Geoff Phillips got a touch from another competitor and spun onto the infield.  Due to him being so far on the infield, the green lights stayed on and he went many laps down.  Phillips rejoined the race many laps down, and put on what can only be described as an entertaining 15 lap sprint, until Phillips luckily got away with a big move on the inside of Wallace, which also resulted in both cars rolling out of contention.

Hawkins was a well deserved winner and was ever so consistent all night and can't wait to race again on the Maryborough track.

"I love this track, it is fast and smooth and you can run anywhere on the track.  I wish we didn't have to wait until 27th February to race here again".  Hawkins said during a pre-race conversion in the pits.

The Super Streets where at there very best on Saturday night and put on some of the closest and fieriest racing seen in the division for many, many years.  Although he didn't win Joel Thomas put on a master show during the reverse grid feature race, starting off the back row and made his way to the lead only to have his commodore over heat during a stoppage only 3 laps from home.  Gympie's Neil Keldoulis went on to win a fantastic feature race with Gladstone's Chris Pendry finished second and the top points scorer who started from dead last on the grid finished a fantastic third.

The AMCA Nationals returned after a lengthy break from Maryborough Speedway and the treated the big Maryborough Speedway crowd to some wonderful racing.  Gladstone's Dean Ballard won a exciting feature race.  Fellow Gladstone driver Tony Curd set a new AMCA one lap record with a 15.799 second lap.

Continuing on the theme of exciting feature races, the 4 Cylinder Sedans certainly provided that with there handicapped reverse grid single file race, which was Gary Cartwright narrowly beat Blake Hancock and Darell Retschlag. Blake Hancock set a new one lap record for the 4 Cylinder Sedans with a 17.155 second lap.

Jamie Purcell won a nailing biting finish in the Nostalgia Sedans final, as Purcell, Geoff Moller and Cyril Bates all ran side by side for the final few laps of the feature and all crossed the line in nearly a dead heat.  Purcell prevailed the winner by the narrowest margins, ahead of Moller and Bates relegated to third.

The Maryborough Speedway now has a 5 week break before the V8 Super Sedans and Midgets head a huge night of action on 31st October.

Wow what a night.

Posted 26th September, 2009

Infront of a big crowd Maryborough Speedway kick off in fine style with a sensational night from all speedway divisions.  Not only did the crowd see an awesome fireworks show and an  excellent race by the rollover cars.

For all the results from tonight, please check out the results page of this website.

A full report from the racing will follow on Monday.

SKM Motorsport roar into 2009/10 season at Maryborough opener

Posted 21st September, 2009

Media Release from Oz Motorsport Promotions

Port Macquarie Dirt Late Model Racer Neil Wallace, principal and lead driver for the SKM Motorsport Team, is counting down the days prior to the first race of the 2009/10 season at Maryborough Speedway (QLD) Saturday September 26.

“I love driving these high power sedans, and with the first Round of the inaugural Queensland Extreme Motorsports ‘Thunder’ Series fast approaching I couldn’t resist the temptation to head north and get some early runs on the board before the NSW Series gets underway in late October” Wallace said.

“I’ve competed at Maryborough on numerous occasions, and it’s a fantastic facility. With the Queensland Dirt Late Model ranks continuing to swell, and a healthy crowd expected, the September 26 race meet should showcase the division at its best”.

The SKM Motorsport Team enjoyed considerable success last season, finishing third in the East Coast Late Model Series. The season also saw the team claim its maiden A Main victory.

“Last season we were still on a steep learning curve with our new Rocket, and we did take a lot of information on board. During the off season we have made some more engine and chassis changes so our aim this season is to be mixing it at the pointy end of the field on a regular basis” said Wallace.

“We intend to follow the East Coast Late Model Affiliates (ELMA) sanctioned East Coast Late Model Series in 2009/10 however we will take in select Extreme Motorsports ‘Thunder’ Series events in Queensland when scheduling permits”.

During the off season Neil Wallace took a three and a half week trip to the USA to catch up on all the latest developments in Dirt Late Model Racing.

“The United States is the home of Dirt Late Model Racing, and as it was my first trip over there it was a real eye opener. While in the US I purchased a 2006 Rocket and a 2008 Rocket and these will be based out of the SKM Motorsport workshop. We will release more information as to the drivers at a later date. In the same container as the pair of Rockets is a MasterSbilt that will be placed on the market when it lands down here” Wallace said.

“In the off season we sold our Swartz machine, and the SKM Motorsport Transporter, to Brisbane racer Kevin Stows who will campaign the car under the Stows Transport banner in the Extreme Motorsports ‘Thunder’ Series. Having sold the transporter its back to hauling the #97 Rocket on a trailer until our new transporter is completed”.

“This promises to be a hectic season, but one that I feel will be very rewarding for the SKM Motorsport Team” stated Wallace.

SKM Motorsport is also pleased to announce that all of the team sponsors from last season are back for this season.
